Providing Safe Loving Homes for Youth in Foster Care
Being Beautiful Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to transforming the lives and futures of youth in foster care. Valerie Crabbe founded the organization to provide at-risk children with stability, compassion, and opportunities that every child deserves, drawing on her personal experience mentoring, fostering, and adopting youth.
The Foundation provides safe, secure, and nurturing homes for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or family hardship and have entered the foster care system. According to the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, more than 4,000 youth are currently in care, and over 40% of them are teens 13 years old and older. Our mission is to ensure these young people have access to loving homes led by dedicated adults who are committed to enriching their lives and supporting their growth.
BBF Homes offers housing, food, clothing, therapeutic services, and life skills training for up to eight children per household. Our unique House Parent Model blends the structure and support of traditional congregate care with the warmth, attention, and stability of a family-style living environment. We provide both interim and long-term care until youth can either reunite safely with their biological families or achieve permanency with an adoptive family.
Corporate contributions and private donations help sustain Being Beautiful Foundation’s work, including Residential Living programs and Foster Care Awareness initiatives. Together, these efforts support children at risk of abuse or neglect throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding metropolitan region—ensuring they receive the love, protection, and opportunities they need to thrive.
Being Beautiful Foundation is an approved United Way Donors Choice Organization. Our Donors Choice Giving code is 52298. You may register through your employer to make tax-deductible contributions.
The Story Behind the Name
The name Being Beautiful was born from heartfelt conversations between Valerie and her adopted daughter, Angela. Throughout her childhood and high school years, Angela faced insecurities about her appearance as she navigated the challenges of adolescence. She often felt unattractive, and those feelings weighed heavily on her confidence.
Valerie remembers spending countless moments reassuring Angela and teaching her what true beauty really means. She would remind her that beauty isn’t defined by outward appearance, but by who you are on the inside — your character, integrity, kindness, honesty, and the way you treat others. She encouraged
Angela to embrace the beauty within herself, even when she couldn’t yet see it. With years of support, encouragement, and counseling, Angela blossomed. Today, she is a confident, accomplished woman — a graduate of La Salle University, a licensed registered nurse, and now a mother herself. One day, as the family discussed ideas for naming the organization, Angela smiled and said, “Why don’t you call it Being Beautiful? That’s what you always taught me to be.” And with that, the name was chosen — a powerful reminder that beauty is not something you see, but something you live.
